ORNL Multipurpose Research Facility (MRF Project)
The MRF is a valuable addition to Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s research portfolio and a critical resource in the Department of Energy’s effort to provide technologies that will strengthen America’s energy security and public safety.
This Optimech Design-Build project was commissioned to provide the infrastructure and secure environment needed to consolidate and integrate multi-disciplinary defense/homeland security capabilities at ORNL. It provides space for weapons nonproliferation research, training, and operations; cyber security research and development; geospatial analysis; inorganic membrane research and prototyping; and other research areas for which adequate infrastructure was lacking. It has space for chemical, material, and electronics labs; fabrication and training; computing centers; conferencing areas; offices; and support infrastructure.
The project attained LEED® Gold Certification by the United States Green Building Council. The certification recognizes an outstanding level of commitment to environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, human health, and sustainability in the design and construction of the building.
Energy use for the facility is approximately 25% less than for a standard code-compliant facility.
